Opinion: Twenty years of Shore Legal Access — laugh, then look up the intake line

Avalon hosts a $20 comedy night Thursday for the nonprofit’s anniversary; civil legal help on the Shore still depends on people knowing the door exists.

EASTON, MARYLAND — Thursday night is a fundraiser with a punch line. Keep the intake number anyway.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, Shore Legal Access marks 20 years with a comedy night at the Avalon Theatre, 40 East Dover Street. The Avalon Foundation listing puts doors at 6:30 p.m., the show at 7:00 p.m., and tickets at $20, fees not included, featuring comedian Jared Stern. Avalon’s calendar carries the same 7:00 p.m. Shore Legal Access anniversary slot.

Civil legal aid is not glamorous copy. It is the quiet work that keeps an eviction from becoming a shelter bed, a protective order from becoming a rumor, a benefit appeal from dying in a pile of forms. Shore Legal Access exists so Mid-Shore residents who cannot hire a private firm still have a place to start. A comedy night will not finish that work. Showing up — or sending someone who needs help to shorelegal.org — might.

This column does not endorse a candidate or a ballot measure. It endorses knowing where the legal-aid door is when a neighbor is out of options.
