WYE MILLS, MARYLAND — The Talbot Soil Conservation District has named Mildred Bullock its 2025 Cooperator of the Year, recognizing years of work to stop erosion and fix drainage on her Talbot County grain farm.
Bullock owns a cash grain operation, farmed by Michael Elben, that grows corn, wheat and soybeans. The district's board of supervisors says she has worked closely with district staff over the past several years on erosion and drainage problems across the farm.
The fixes are the kind that keep soil in fields and out of ditches and creeks: grassed waterways, which are planted channels that carry runoff without cutting gullies; diversions that steer water across a slope; rock-lined outlets; blind inlets; and grade stabilization structures. District staff designed each practice, and the work was supported through the Maryland Agricultural Cost-Share program, which helps farmers pay for conservation projects.
District Chairman John Swaine III presented a sign to Bullock and her family. The district said the practices protect soil and improve water quality.
The 2024 award went to Wye Mills Farm Limited Partnership, a grain operation of more than 500 acres in the Wye River watershed owned by Bill Boyd. The 2023 honoree was Webb Dulin Jr. of Twin Cedar Farms, a pasture-based cattle grazing operation.
The district's office is at 28577 Mary's Court in Easton.
