ST. MICHAELS, MARYLAND — Lady Maryland, a reproduction of a Chesapeake Bay pungy schooner and the only pungy schooner in existence, will visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Saturday, Oct. 24, and its crew will give free deck tours with museum admission from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The tours are included with general admission to the museum at 213 North Talbot St., which is always free for museum members. No reservations or extra tickets are needed, the museum says.
Pungies worked the Bay beginning in the early part of the 19th century and were considered among the fastest of all Bay watercraft, according to the museum and the Living Classrooms Foundation, which lists Lady Maryland among its boats. They often carried perishable cargoes such as fruits, vegetables and fish around the region. Similar in design to the Baltimore Clippers, they were known for speed, maneuverability and green and pink topsides.
Lady Maryland was built in 1986 as the first hands-on learning project of the Lady Maryland Foundation, which later became Living Classrooms. The foundation lists the schooner at 104 feet overall, with a 92-foot rig height and a 22-foot beam. It sails with thousands of students each year, traveling between the Chesapeake region and New England each season.
The museum's information line is 410-745-2916.
