EASTON, MARYLAND — The Talbot Historical Society offers a free Hill Community Walking Tour with Yvonne Freeman on Saturday, Oct. 17, beginning at 9 a.m. Visitors meet at 25 S. Washington St., Easton.
The society says the Hill Community, one block away from the Talbot Historical Society, is one of the oldest free Black neighborhoods still in existence in the United States, shaped by generations of resilience, faith and community. Freeman's tour walks historic streets, includes personal stories from the neighborhood and traces that legacy. The Hill Community Project dates the neighborhood's founding to 1788 and says many African Americans in Easton and Talbot County were free from slavery long before the Civil War ended.
The tour is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged to support Asbury United Methodist Church, Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and the East-End Neighborhood Association. Depending on church functions, interiors may not be open. The society hopes the early start keeps the group out of the day's heat. The tour window is listed as 9 to 11 a.m.
Reservations and questions: 410-822-0773 or kaylaw [at] talbothistory.org. Society office, research and exhibit hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 25 and 30 S. Washington Street.
