ST. MICHAELS, MARYLAND — Bridget Whited, an art teacher at St. Michaels Middle/High School, has been named the 2026 Conservation Education Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts.
The award recognizes teachers who bring conservation, environmental stewardship, agriculture and natural resource education into the classroom, according to an Aug. 28 release from the Talbot Soil Conservation District, which nominated her for the statewide honor.
Whited was recognized for her continued support of the district's annual conservation poster contest, which gives students a way to explore conservation themes through art. The district said her involvement encourages students to think about the connections between agriculture, natural resources and the environment, and the role they can play in protecting Maryland's natural resources.
She was honored at the association's 2026 annual meeting in Cambridge in August. The district's website shows her with John Swaine III, the association's president and chairman of the Talbot Soil Conservation District.
The district has sponsored the Land Stewardship Poster Contest for 36 years, providing poster board and a theme to public and private schools in Talbot County. The 2026 theme was "Soil. Where it all Begins." Each school picks its own first-place posters for countywide judging timed with Earth Day; first-place winners receive a $50 gift card, and second- and third-place winners receive $25 gift cards.
