EASTON, MARYLAND — Talbot County Public Schools is piloting weapons detection screening at selected fall athletic events, the district said in official Live Feed notices for the 2026 season.
The pilot covers all home varsity football games at Easton High School and all home varsity soccer games at St. Michaels Middle High School. Spectators must pass through a walk-through weapons detection system before entering. If the system flags an item for further review, staff may use a handheld security wand as a secondary check. By entering, guests consent to that screening.
Two dated notices. The original district release, dated Aug. 17 and carried by the Star Democrat, said screening would be in effect for “the first home event on Friday, Aug. 21.” Easton’s official football schedule lists Aug. 21 as an away scrimmage, not a home game. A later Live Feed notice said screening begins with the home games scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4 — Easton High’s home football opener against Caesar Rodney and St. Michaels’ home soccer date, the MPSSAA first-play window. The operational home start is Sept. 4. Aug. 21 was a scrimmage on the road.
Student spectators may not bring backpacks, book bags, or other large bags. Adult spectators may carry bags, which remain subject to screening and inspection.
Superintendent Dr. Sharon Pepukayi, on the record in the district notice, said: “We are committed to creating an environment where students can compete, families can cheer, and our community can gather with confidence. These proactive measures reflect our ongoing commitment to school safety while maintaining a positive experience for everyone attending our athletic events.”
TCPS asked fans to arrive early, limit personal items, follow event staff directions, and tell staff about medical devices that may need accommodation. For entry questions, the notice names Sherry Spurry, Coordinator of School Safety and Security, at the Talbot County Education Center, (410) 822-0330.
