TILGHMAN, MARYLAND — A Tilghman Island seafood business will receive $103,082 from a state grant program aimed at keeping Maryland food cold between the dock or field and the buyer.
Tilghman Island Seafood, LLC is listed with full funding of $103,082 for a project the state titles "Seafood Postharvest Infrastructure & Cold Chain Network for Rural Maryland Watermen," according to the Maryland Department of Agriculture's list of Postharvest Infrastructure Grant recipients. It is the only recipient on the list with a Talbot County address.
The department announced Oct. 13 that 37 organizations in 16 rural Maryland counties will share nearly $3.6 million. The program is meant to expand food aggregation and distribution in rural communities by adding and building cold storage and delivery networks, the department said.
Statewide, the funded projects include buying coolers and freezers, fitting distribution vehicles with cooling equipment, upgrading inventory tracking, improving loading docks and handling equipment, and modernizing food safety systems. The state's list gives only the title of the Tilghman project, not its equipment or timeline.
"These grants will create stronger markets for our farmers and watermen, while ensuring consumers have reliable access to nutritious and locally-produced food," Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks said in the release.
The grants are part of the Maryland Rural Health Transformation Program, which is funded by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
