EASTON, MARYLAND — The Talbot Soil Conservation District is bringing back the county's Envirothon, a hands-on environmental competition for high school-aged students, and will explain how to join at a free open house Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The open house runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Talbot Agriculture and Education Center, 10659 Hiners Lane in Easton. Students, parents, educators and community members can meet program organizers and natural resource professionals and hear about training and the local competition.

The program is open to high school-aged students in Talbot County, including students from public and private schools, homeschool students and youth taking part through other community organizations. No previous Envirothon experience is needed. The district is rebuilding the program for the 2026–2027 school year.

Students in grades 9 through 12 compete in teams of five. They study aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and a current environmental issue chosen each year, working with soil scientists, foresters, wildlife biologists and other specialists.

"The Envirothon program provides students with a unique opportunity to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real-world natural resource challenges," said Shawn D. Smith, district manager of the Talbot Soil Conservation District.

After the open house, a spring training day is set for Saturday, March 20, 2027, and a testing day for Saturday, April 17, 2027, both from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ag Center. Qualifying teams can advance to the Maryland Envirothon in June 2027.

The district asks people to RSVP for the open house on its website. Smith coordinates the program and can be reached at 410-822-1577, extension 3.
