BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits will increase 3.6 percent in 2027, the Social Security Administration announced Oct. 14.
Nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the cost-of-living adjustment beginning with benefits payable in January 2027. Increased payments to about 7.3 million SSI recipients begin Dec. 31, 2026. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by $75 per month, SSA said.
The taxable maximum for Social Security earnings rises to $192,300. For people receiving retirement or survivor benefits who remain below full retirement age throughout 2027, the annual earnings threshold before benefits are reduced rises to $25,560. For those reaching full retirement age during 2027, the threshold is $67,920, counting only earnings before the month they reach that age. Beginning that month, earnings no longer reduce benefits.
People with a personal my Social Security account can view their COLA notice online starting in late November, up to three weeks earlier than a paper notice arrives, SSA said. People without an account will need to create one and enroll in paperless notices by Nov. 18 to see the notice online. Those who have not enrolled in paperless notices will receive their COLA notice by mail in December. Details are at ssa.gov/cola.
