EASTON, MARYLAND — The Primary Stroke Center at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton has been recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for the 11th year in a row, UM Shore Regional Health announced Oct. 8.
The hospital received the associations' Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll, plus Gold-level recognition for rural stroke care. The rural recognition reflects performance on guideline measures including clot-dissolving IV medicine, timely transfer to another hospital, swallowing screening, brain imaging, communication with emergency medical crews and consultation with stroke experts.
The hospital cited an American Heart Association advisory that found people in rural communities live an average of three years fewer than people in cities and face a 30 percent higher risk of dying from stroke.
"Excellent stroke care depends on every link in the chain, beginning with our EMS partners and continuing through our Emergency Department, neurology, radiology, pharmacy, laboratory and nursing teams," said Dr. M. Walid Kamsheh, medical director of the Primary Stroke Center.
The Easton hospital was designated a Primary Stroke Center in 2007, according to the release. UM Shore Regional Health treats about 600 stroke patients a year, according to its stroke care page. Its stroke support group meets in person and online the first Thursday of each month from noon to 1 p.m. at the UM Shore Medical Pavilion at Easton Conference Center, Suite 204, 500 Cadmus Lane. Nicole Leonard, the hospital's stroke coordinator, can be reached at 410-822-1000, ext. 5068, for details.
