EASTON, MARYLAND — The Academy Art Museum opens its feature exhibition for the nation's 250th anniversary, "From Sea to Shining Sea: American Landscape Painting, 1850–1950," on Saturday, Nov. 7. The show runs through May 23, 2027, in the museum's Lederer and Healy Galleries at 106 South Street.

The exhibition gathers more than 40 paintings from a major private collection, arranged as what the museum calls a visual road trip across American landscapes and seascapes, from Maine and the Northeast to Puerto Rico and the West Coasts of California and Oregon. The paintings will be organized geographically so visitors can compare regional variations. Many of the artists belonged to established artist colonies around the country, and a number of them were immigrants, according to the exhibition page.

One highlight is Allen Tucker's "Storm in the Rockies," painted in 1912 and first exhibited at the International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York, popularly known as the 1913 Armory Show.

Gallery hosts will lead free conversational tours on Saturdays, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in Spanish and from 2 to 2:30 p.m. in English. Families can pick up a free self-guided scavenger hunt at the front desk. Fourth- and fifth-grade school groups and homeschool co-ops can reserve free guided tours that end with hands-on art-making.

Two free lectures tied to the show require registration. William L. Coleman, director of the Wyeth Study Center at the Brandywine Museum of Art, speaks Friday, Jan. 8, 2027, at 6 p.m. Ben Tilghman, an associate professor of art history at Washington College, follows Friday, Feb. 26, 2027, at 6 p.m., with a talk on John Muir, landscape painting and the national parks.

Museum members are invited to a reception and guided tour Friday, Nov. 6, at 9 a.m., the morning before the public opening.
